Christmas at midsummer in India

Edith at work

a Christmastree made of garbage

21th of June 2008 I finally managed to visit the centre for therapy and education for disabled childern in India.
It is located in the middle of a village between Chennai and Pondicherri not far from the famous rocktemples of Mamalapuram.

This center was founded by the Duch nurse Fabien Schiereck and supported by “earth aid India”.

The reason why I desired to visit this NGO project goes back to last Christmas.

I am sure that all the sailors of the “Vasco da Gama rally” will look back with joy to some special events wich took place in Port Ghalib last December. We together created a Christmas tree out of trash and garbage. This involved collecting garbage from the beach, painting, glueing, and a lot of phantasy and love. The result was a true trash-tree.

The manager of the luxery resort “Coral beach” gave us permission to invite his Hotel guests to observe our work. Finally we auctioned the best pieces of the tree and… belive it or not… we made 400 US dollars. Imagine, wealthy Egyptians buying their own garbage with joy. What a fun for all.

We declared that the gain of the auction will be dedicated to this specific Earth aid India project.

I was delighted to find one of the sailors at the little center. She, a experienced Duch therapist was treating a little boy. Whithin playing she got the baby to strech his crippeld little arms and feet.
She itroduced me to Fabien, the founder of the center and I was invited to sit and watch.

Currently 12 childern come on a regulare basis to te center. All of them a multiple handicaped. The little ones are hardly able to communicate but it is easy to observe that they enjoy each others company. In my eyes even more important is the fact, that the mothers get out of their isolation and get in touch with others suffering the same fate. Abandoned by their familys they have to survive. The center offers shelter and protection. The mums teach each other to live and to laugh. Every little target reached by one of the children is a reason to applaude and celebrate.
An other sailor went out to visit the familys of the handicaped childern in theire villages. For him an easy target to fix a leacking roof. For the childern and the mums a great present.

The 400 Dollars were well invested in this center and its future developement.
So I wish all the Vasco da Gama ralliers a happy memory to Christmas 2007.

Best regards from India

Eva
